The Sir Nigel Gresley is a London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) A4 class locomotive, No. 4498, which is the holder of the postwar steam record speed of 112 mph. The speed record was set on 23 May 1959 when on the return trip from Doncaseter works full of passengers. The maximum speed of the trip was set when the Sir nigel Gresley was on it’s southward descent from Stoke Summit. The Sir Nigel Gresley was built in October 1937 and was withdrawn from service in February 1966. The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust, Ltd. now maintains Sir Nigel Gresley operating out of North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
