Description
311th Fighter Group A-36 Apache AC# 43-6081
The North American A-36 Apache was the ground-attack/dive bomber version of the North American P-51A Mustang, from which it could be distinguished by the presence of rectangular, slatted dive brakes above and below the wings.
Colonel Creech flew 60 missions against Japanese military targets as a Dragonfly of the 528th Fighter Squadron. Shot down twice, he was forced to survive in the hostile jungles of India and Burma. It is unknown which actual A-36 aircraft of the 311th
Creech was flying when he crashed in Burma in June of 1944. A-36 serial number 43-6081 is recorded as crashed as of July 1944 and was most likely one of the A-36 aircraft flown by Col. Creech.
