Build a paper model of the 5,000th P-38 built!
Yippee! was the 5,000th P-38, a J model, to come off of the Lockheed assembly line in Burbank, California. Given a bright paint job, the Yippee! slogan, and adorned with the autographs of all the Lockheed employees who built it, Yippee! was flown as a technical demonstrator and Public Relations symbol by the senior pilots of the Lockheed company, Milo Burcham and Tony LeVier.
In 1944, the glossy paint job was removed and the former Yippee! was sent to the southwest Pacific, to finish out the war flying combat, and to be unceremoniously disposed of once its combat career was over.
This paper model builds Yippee! in her glory days as an expression of the pride of the men and women who built her.
