Stepan Ridnyi was a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Order of Lenin. Since his childhood dream of becoming a pilot.From the earliest days of the Great Patriotic War, was a pilot of 126-IAP. Ridnyi shot down the first German bomber on June 23, 1941, and 20 days of the war shot down 8 enemy aircraft. In one of the air battles, fighter Stepan G. Ridnyi was heavily damaged by enemy shell crashed into a swamp and the mechanics were able to deliver parts of it back to the regiment. Left without a combat vehicle, Stepan Ridnyi and here found a way – he took a decommissioned aircraft, and a little repair it, returned to duty.For courage and heroism in aerial combat, Stepan Ridnyi was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. During WWII, Stepan G. Ridnyi made 172 sorties, carried out 53 air battles, he personally shot down 9 enemy planes.
