Description

THIS KIT IS A REISSUE OF A PREVIOUS ECARDMODELS.COM LISTING

Jack Northrop was fascinated by the concept of the flying wing, and experimented with flying wing designs beginning in 1929. In 1946, Northrup built the XB-35, a recip-powered bomber prototype. Flights with the XB-35 were successful enough that the design was developed into the jet-powered YB-49. Nine XB-35s were built and were to be converted into YB-49s when the the USAF cancelled the development program. Despite the VB-49’s speed and performance figures, which were impressive, it lacked one feature the USAF had to have- the ability to carry the atomic bombs of the day. The Convair B-36 was chosen as the USAF’s next intercontinental bomber, and all nine of Northrop’s flying wing bombers were scrapped.

This paper model model builds the YB-49 prototype, which first flew on October 21, 1947. The design of this paper model is the work of Cor van Haasteren and is Cor van Haasteren’s first ever design.  This model features detailed landing gear, with the option to build the model “in flight”.
