Description

Numerous difficulties and problems had to be resolved before steam locomotive engines evolved into their current state. A prime example was the challenge of handling the large quantities of smoke and soot produced by early locomotives, which awaited a solution for many years.

In 1829, Stephenson proposed and designed a coke-burning engine that produced significantly less smoke. It featured a unique construction, consisting of two vertical boilers and, accordingly, two chimneys. The locomotive was equipped with two inclined steam cylinders that drove six coupled wheels via connecting rods. The engine was built on a wooden chassis with wooden wheels reinforced by metal tires—a distinctive feature represented in the model through specific coloring. Initially named ‘Twin Sisters,’ the engine later became known as the ‘Liverpool Coke Engine.’ Attached to the locomotive were two auxiliary wagons (tenders) for fuel and the necessary water supply.
