Miles M.14 Magister
The Miles M.14 Magister was designed to the RAF’s specification T.40/36, a requirement for a basic trainer capable of aerobatics. Miles based this new design on their earlier Hawk Trainer, a sleek tandem-seat civil trainer. Major difference between the Hawk Trainer and the Magister was the more corpulent fuselage, dictated by the RAF’s requirement for added instrumentation and the need for easy egress of pilot and instructor wearing parachutes. As a consequence, the elegant vertical tail known from earlier Miles designs had to give way to a much larger version.
The Magister was largely made of wood, a Miles specialty. This unfortunately also means that only a limited number of the 1300+ built still exist today, with just a handful in airworthy condition.
