The Nieuport 11, was a French World War I single seat fighter aircraft, designed by Gustave Delage.
It is famous as one of the aircraft that ended the ‘Fokker Scourge’ in 1916. This small, lightly loaded sesquiplane outclassed the Fokker Eindekker in practically every respect.
This is the plane my wife’s great-great uncle flew in to become an ace in WWI – he later went on to become the commander of the entire French Air Force:
Name: Joseph Vuillemin Country: France Unit: Escadrille C11 Victories: 7
Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur “A pilot of remarkable skill. At the front since the war began, he has never ceased to gain the admiration of his comrades and his seniors by his valor, spirit and disdain for danger. He has had more than 60 aerial combats, downed three enemy planes, carried out numerous night bombardments. He has given the most brilliant service to his country during the course of recent operations. Cited five times in orders.” Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur citation, 28 October 1916
