Description

Lockheed C-130 Israel Air Force 4X-FBQ
In 1976, PLO terrorists hijacked an Air France Airbus A300 as it landed at Entebbe Airport in Uganda. Supported by Uganda’s dictator Idi Amin, the terrorists were able to hold over 100 passengers and crew hostage for more than a week. Another 150 hostages (all non-Israelis) were released within the first 48 hours of the standoff. Israeli Defense Forces eventually ended the hostage taking by conducting a night raid involving four Hercules C130 aircraft and over 100 Israeli Commandoes. In the 90 minute raid nicknamed Operation Thunderbolt, 102 hostages were rescued, five Israeli commandos were wounded and one, the unit commander, Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, was killed.  All of the hijackers, three hostages and 45 Ugandan soldiers were killed, and thirty Soviet-built MiG-17s and MiG-21s of Uganda’s air force were destroyed.
