1/33 Mk9 Spitfire RAF BS273 High Altitude Fighter Galitzine Paper Model

Description

Issue Number One of the “Rare & Unusual Paint Schemes – Supermarine Spitfire” is BS273 F/O Prince Emanuel Galitzine.

Russian immigrant Prince Emanuel Galitzine, was posted to RAF 504 Squadron in Northern Ireland, and then to the “Experimental Special Service Flight” in Northolt.
This was an experimental unit aimed at countering the threat of German pressurized high-altitude Ju 86P bombers over Britain. The unit received a pair of then-new Mk. IX Spitfires . These aircraft did not have pressurized cockpits, but were converted for high-altitude duties. The aircraft were lightened by 450 lb and repainted with “special light-weight paint”.
On 12 September 1942, BS273 flown by Galitzine successfully intercepted a Ju 86R above Southampton at 41,000 ft. The ensuing battle went up to 43,000 ft and was the highest recorded air combat of the war.
Unfortunately, Galitzine’s armament was limited to a port cannon which froze solid and affected the flight of the aircraft when used.
The German bomber escaped safely with just one hit, but as a result of this interception the Luftwaffe launched no further high-altitude attacks against England.

A derivative design of Marek’s 1/50 scale Spitfire models, this model has been upscaled to 1/33 and completely repainted with this historic livery.
The kit also features other upgrades like photorealistic elements and simulated landing gear wells.
Kit contains 6 pages including basic assembly diagrams and internal formers.
