In use by many allied countries, the Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Most famously known for its exploits during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire continued to be used into the 1950s in several roles within the air forces of developing countries. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only Allied fighter to be produced during the entire war period.
Advancing development of the German Bf-109 forced the RAF to modify the production of the Spitfire to the Mk.V version. This version featured an upgraded Mk.II airframe with a new Merlin 45 engine for improved high altitude performance. Initially, the wing remained unchanged, but additional requirements dictated the need for upgraded wings. These new wings were identified by a letter following the “V” in the designation. Each letter indicated a different armament load out, with the V.c being a “universal” wing being fitted with various combinations of armament, including four 20mm cannon and four .303 machine guns.
This paper model kit builds a Spitfire Mk.Vc of No.303 Polish Squadron, flown by Pilot Officer Antoni Glowacki.
