1/33 scale Republic P47D Razorback Thunderbolt War Eagle / Snafu
Originally 42-74742 Republic P-47D-6-RE Thunderbolt “War Eagle”, flown by Captain Julius Maxwell…of the Duxford Eagles, 84th Fighter Squadron (78th Fighter Group USAAF) flying from Duxford England in 1944…a veteran of over 130 missions with 2 1/2 kills.
P-47D 42-74742 WZ-O, was later renamed “Snafu”, WZ-D, while flown by Lt. Severino B. Calderon (another 90 missions).
In December of 1944, whilst on loan to another pilot, Lt Earl Stier, 42-74742 was damaged beyond repair in a crash landing.
Another restored P47 flies today as a recreation of 42-7472 painted in the original “War Eagle/Snafu” paint scheme, however it also displays D-Day Invasion stripes.
