Description

This paper model builds the P-51C aircraft “Excalibur III” (formerly named “Blaze of Noon”) which is now on permanent display in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Originally owned and flown by famed aviator A. Paul mantz, Blaze of Noon won the 1946 and 1947 Bendix Air Races and set a transcontinental speed in 1947.
Purchased in 1949 by Capt. Charles F Blair, the aircraft was renamed Excalibur III and went on to set another Transcontinental speed record by flying from New York to london in less than 8 hours, shattering the existing record by more than an hour.
On May 29 1951, Capt. Blair flew Excalibur III from Norway across the North Pole to Alaska in a record setting 10 and 1/2 hours. Precise navigation was possible using Blair’s own system of plotted “sun lines” rather than conventional Magnetic compass.
