The F-6D is the Tactical Reconnaisance version of the Mustang, fitted with fuselage mounted Cameras just aft of the cockpit.
A total of 163 P-51D/Ks were completed as F-6D/K photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Unlike many other reconnaisance aircraft the Mustangs retained their wing mounted Guns, making them formidable “spies”.
This kit builds Major William Shomo’s 5th aircraft, given the title “Snooks 5th”. As part of the 82nd Tactical Recon Squad (Phillipines), “Bill” received the Medal of Honor for his actions flying this very aircraft. During a reconnaisance mission, Shomo and his wingman came across an escorted Bomber sortie, and Capt. Shomo was personally responsible for the downing of seven aircraft, including two of the Bombers.
