The North American P-51/F-51 Mustang may be one of the most recognized and successful Fighter aircraft of all time of all time. Serving throughout WW2 in the European and Pacific theaters, it is still flown today in various evolved configurations.
In the late 1950s, the Cavalier Aircraft Corporation converted surplus P51D (F51D) Mustangs into “Executive Business Aircraft”. Airframes were completely disassembled and rebuilt with a second rear seat, plush leather interiors, Luggage compartments and wing tip fuel tanks. Originally intended as a high speed personal aircraft, the Cavalier was also exported for use as a fighter and close air support aircraft.
The US Army purchased 3 Cavalier Mustangs to act as chase planes for the AH-56 Cheyenne attack helicopter project. One was a re-furbished P-51D (a/c# 0-72990) while the other two were Cavalier Mustangs coded 68-15795 and 68-15796
