Description

On 12 Sept 1863, the USS Tecumseh was launched from Jersey City, New Jersey. A single turret, iron hulled monitor, the Tecumseh was pressed into service as part of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron.  Working with the Union Army, the Tecumseh was used to block the James River channel to prevent Confederate warships from reaching the upper river channels.During this time, the Tecumseh was responsible for sinking four hulks and a schooner.  The Tecumseh’s most famous battle would be its last.
